The World History Center provides funding for fellowships in World History and to support Pitt faculty and graduate students for travel related to research or conferences.  We also offer Research Associate or Visiting Scholar status to a limited number of world historians around the globe each year and we supports events and research activities at Pitt.  Through our affiliation with NOGHWISTO, we promote world history events globally as well.

World History Center Travel Funding

Twice each academic year, once in the Fall semester and once in the Spring semester, the World History Center earmarks up to $2000 to be used to reimburse eligible costs for graduate students attending conferences or performing research. The funding requests are competitive and distributed as follows: up to $500 for a research or conference trip in the eastern US; up to $1000 for a research or conference trip elsewhere in North America, and up to $1500 for a research or conference trip outside of North America. Graduate students in any department at the University of Pittsburgh are eligible for these awards. Field of study is open; the applicant need only demonstrate that the proposed activity contributes to insight about the human past at the transregional or global scale.

Here is a list of past award winners

Event and Research Activity Sponsorship

The WHC also events and research activities at Pitt. We welcome opportunities to co-sponsor talks or events on campus that align with our mission and research priorities.  We will evaluate requests for modest funding for events that focus on historical connections at the transregional or global scale.  Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and we encourage applications early in the academic year. Requests for support should be sent to whc@pitt.edu and should briefly explain the event’s intellectual connection to the WHC's mission and priorities, as well as its anticipated audience and impact, and the proposed schedule. Please plan to send a brief report to the WHC after the conclusion of your co-sponsored event.

Research Associates and Visiting Scholars

The WHC can offer scholars and researchers Center affiliation through our Research Associate (RA) and Visiting Scholar (VS) programs.  Generally speaking, these positions are official University of Pittsburgh appointments that exist outside of any tenure stream and do not carry any funding or salary obligations by Pitt or the WHC.  These are most often volunteer appointments for a specific time period whereas the individual will receive a sponsored University account for email, network access, and library privileges.

For individuals seeking affiliation as an RA or VS, the Center requires the following application materials:

  • A letter detailing the scope and focus of their research, an explanation on how it relates to transregional or global history, and a statement on how the WHC, and Pitt more broadly, can help them achieve their goals.
  • A current CV
  • Letters of recommendation from a Pitt faculty/researcher and a letter from a non-Pitt faculty/researcher
  • A photo and bio for our website
  • Evidence of funding support for their time in Pittsburgh or expenses related to their research.

These materials can be submitted to whc@pitt.edu at any time.
