"Who Rules the World Today?" A New Article by WHC Founder Patrick Manning

In a new article on his blog, Contending Voices: Problems in World History, Dr. Patrick Manning asks, “Who governs the world—the United States or the United Nations?” Dr. Manning, the founder of the World History Center and a vital voice in the field of world history, says that the answer to this question will determine the likelihood of a global order that recognizes Palestinian sovereignty and a Palestinian nation in peace with Israel.

Global popular opinion has called for peace in Gaza since the events of October 7, 2024, a sentiment reflected by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). In December 2024, the UNGA had near unanimous support for a ceasefire resolution until it was vetoed by the United States. When South Africa accused Israel of genocide at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the court ordered an immediate end to killing and military action. Despite popular opinion and the actions of the UN, the U.S. continues to provide arms and political support to Israel.

Manning argues that the Israel-Hamas War is a likely turning point in global affairs and that U.S. global dominance may have to give way to a consensus at the United Nations. Once the slaughter is over, the question of who governs the world will determine the future of Gaza.
